NSW: Reprieve today but firefighters braced for the worst

SYDNEY, Jan 20 AAP - Firefighters in NSW were given a reprieve today from predictedhigh winds and scorching temperatures but 70 fires continue to burn across the state.
The break gave firefighters the chance to undertake several successful backburningoperations ahead of expected temperatures in the mid-30s and worsening conditions tomorrow.
NSW Rural Fire Service (RFS) boss Phil Koperberg also extended a statewide fire banfor another 24 hours and residents in the state's south-east were asked to remain on alert.
