NSW: Truck drivers apply for increase in allowances

SYDNEY, April 24 AAP - Truck drivers in NSW are attempting to get a $20 increase intheir pay rates.

The Transport Workers Union (TWU) has applied to the Australian Industrial RelationsCommission for a rise in the long-distance truck driver's overnight allowance from $20.22to $40.

The union has also applied for an amendment to the award to provide for daily mealallowances of $61 for drivers required to be way from home overnight.

The allowance would not be payable where the employer provided suitable accommodation and meals.

TWU state secretary Tony Sheldon said the application came after the union comparedmeal and accommodation allowances across a number of industries.

"The TWU claim reflects reimbursement for actual costs incurred in purchasing mealsand recognises the disadvantage involved in sleeping in a truck in generally poorly equippedrest areas," Mr Sheldon said.

The application is set to go to the commission on May 8.
